Working as a medical aesthetician at LifeScape Aesthetics, I've witnessed how stretch marks can unfortunately impact a person's self-esteem. Whether they're the result of pregnancy, rapid weight changes, or hormonal fluctuations, stretch marks can be a source of frustration and embarrassment.
I understand the desire to minimize their appearance, and I've helped countless patients achieve their goals. Let's explore some of the most common questions I receive about stretch marks.
What causes stretch marks?
The primary cause of stretch marks is rapid skin expansion or contraction. This often occurs during pregnancy, puberty (specifically with boys), or significant weight changes.
The natural aging process also makes us more prone to stretch marks. As we age our bodies produce less collagen and elastin, making it harder to bounce back from pregnancy or weight changes.
Lesser known causes can include hormonal factors, genetics, certain medical conditions, extended use of steroids and skin type (lighter skin tones are more susceptible to stretch marks).
Are there different types of stretch marks?
There are several types of stretch marks:
- Newly formed stretch marks: These are typically red or pinkish in color and may be raised or itchy.
- Mature (or chronic) stretch marks: These are older stretch marks that have lost their color and become white or silvery.
- Hyperpigmented stretch marks: These are darker stretch marks that may have a brownish or purple hue because of the overproduction of melanin.
- Atrophic stretch marks: These are indented or depressed stretch marks due to a fat or tissue loss under the surface.
What are the best stretch mark treatments?
The best approach depends on the type, severity, and your individual skin characteristics. I often recommend a combination of treatments, including:
- Topical creams: For newer stretch marks, topical creams containing vitamin E, shea butter, hyaluronic acid, retinoids, or cocoa butter can help improve their appearance.
- Laser therapy: This can help reduce the appearance of mature or hyperpigmented stretch marks.
- Microneedling: This involves using tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating collagen and elastin production.
- Chemical peels: These can help improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of stretch marks.
- Dermal fillers: These can be used to fill in indented or depressed stretch marks.
How can Sylfirm X help with stretch marks?
Sylfirm X is a powerful treatment that combines microneedling and radiofrequency energy to create controlled micro injuries in the skin that then triggers your body’s own natural wound healing response to stimulate production of collagen and elastin in the skin. This is essential to improving the texture and appearance of stretch marks, going beyond the surface level to heat tissue, stimulate and remodel.
Sylfirm X also allows the flexibility to adjust the needle depth and RF settings to customize and tailor treatments for different skin types, stretch marks and skin concerns.
It can be used to treat various skin concerns, including stretch marks. Sylfirm X can be customized to address different skin types and stretch mark severities.
Are there specific considerations with Sylfirm X for individuals with darker skin tones?
Individuals with darker skin tones have an increased risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) after treatment. To minimize this risk, we'll use a steroid cream before the procedure and adjust the treatment settings. In some cases, a topical hydroquinone may be used to further reduce the risk of PIH.
Diligent sun protection and topical brightening agents will be necessary after treatment to prevent hyperpigmentation.
What lifestyle factors play a role in preventing stretch marks?
While treatments can help minimize the appearance of stretch marks, lifestyle factors also play a role. I recommend:
- Protecting your skin: Protecting your skin with high quality sunscreen and moisturizers helps preserve collagen and elastin, making it more resilient and less prone to damage. The better you care for your skin, the easier it is to maintain its health and appearance.
- Eating a healthy diet: I always tell clients that your skin is the window into their internal health. A healthy diet rich in nutrients supports healthy skin. Processed foods, refined sugar, and alcohol can damage collagen and elastin, leading to premature aging. Similarly, smoking and vaping contribute to wrinkles and other signs of aging.
- Staying hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help keep your skin hydrated.
Can stretch marks be completely removed?
While stretch marks may not be completely eliminated, treatments can significantly improve their appearance.
The response of the skin will vary, too, depending on the location on the body and the thickness of the skin. For instance, the skin on the abdomen is thinner and more delicate than upper arms and thighs and is more difficult to treat. Thicker skin can typically withstand the treatment better and heal more quickly.
Another factor to consider in the results of treatment is the skin mobility and tension. Areas that experience a lot of day to day movement (e.g. abdomen during pregnancy, thighs during a workout) have more visible stretch marks and can be more challenging to treat due to that continuous skin movement. It’s harder to heal when they’re constantly moving.
A lesser known factor in treatment results is blood flow. Someone who is a smoker or has lymphatic drainage issues will have a harder time getting rid of stretch marks. Better blood circulation will create a better response to treatment.
To optimize treatment, you really need to stay on top of it - it’s not a one and done situation, it’s a commitment to how you’re treating your body (from the inside out).
It's important to have realistic expectations and to discuss your goals with a qualified medical professional.
