Q: Why Stretch?

A: We get so caught up in weight loss, cardio vascular endurance and muscular strength that we often forget one fitness component that is just as vital as the others... flexibility.

Q: Who needs stretching?

A: EVERYONE! Studies continue to show that we experience a better quality of life and other long term benefits when we include full body stretching into our daily routines.

Q: What kind of benefits can you experience from stretching?

A: The benefits of stretching (correctly) include: Decreased Stiffness, Improved Function, Reduced Pain, Enhanced Performance, Improved Range Of Motion, Improved Balance, Decreased Anxiety and Depression, Improved Posture and Balance

Q: What’s the science behind stretching?

A: We each possess three different types of muscle tissue in our body. In particular, skeletal muscle is the type that enables movement at the joints. Different muscles in the body produce different types of movements by shortening, or contracting, while other muscles must lengthen, or stretch. These opposing actions ultimately create your body's controlled movements.

In our workouts we often isolate muscles and movements. But our body is more of a kinetic chain, in which our individual muscle groups connect and work together as a single unit. For us to achieve fluidity and flexibility, this sense of balance among the various muscles must exist. When the muscles on each side of the joint share an equal degree of pull, we are able to move the joint freely in all directions. However, when one of our muscles becomes chronically tight and tense weakening opposing muscles, we create wear and tear on various joints.

If your muscles are tense or tight and contracted, they weaken, causing you to become less limber. Poor posture, improper form when performing everyday tasks, repetitive movements, and spending long periods of time seated commonly lead to tight and tense muscles.
