It’s November which means fall is official! Well, we know it’s technically been official for awhile, but those of us who live in southern states have had to wait for the weather to actually cool off. Now that the temps are dropping, it’s time to take another look at your skin care.
Why? When the weather changes, so does your skin - for a variety of reasons. And due to the changes in your skin, you may need to switch up your skincare routine to keep that glow going.
Here’s everything you need to know about autumn skin care and how to truly fall in love with your skin.
Your skin experiences seasonal changes just like the weather outside. During the summer months, the hot sun can cause increased oil and sweat which leads to using a lighter moisturizer and cooler showers. As the weather changes, during the fall months, the air becomes drier and colder, and the showers become hotter and harsher on your skin.
You have to change up your skin care routine when this happens, otherwise you’ll find yourself looking in the mirror at dull, dry, and unhappy skin. However, don’t stress! Making these skin care changes is easy and painless. Here’s what you need to do.
When the heaters get turned on and the showers get hotter, this can cause your skin (and nails and hair!) to start to get flaky and dry. Flaky skin can lead to irritation, makeup that doesn’t sit right, and acne. It’s just a big pile of bad news for skin.
One of the ways you can combat this is by gently exfoliating a couple of times a week after cleansing your face, and then applying moisturizer after. Gently exfoliating using a washcloth or face scrub can help to remove flakes, residual makeup, and any other material that will clog your pores.
While we recommend moisturizing your lovely skin all year long, cold weather moisturizing is different than what you need in the summer months. Summer calls for lightweight moisturizers that hydrate your skin but absorb quickly. Fall and winter calls for slightly more heavy duty moisturizers to make sure you’re soothing and repairing your dry skin.
No matter what the temperature outside, drinking lots of water is a must! Not only does it flush toxins from your body, but it helps keep your skin looking clear and bright. We added this reminder on this list because when the weather cools off, you might be drinking more caffeine than usual (PSL’s, anyone?) and you might not feel as thirsty. However, just because you don’t feel thirsty doesn’t mean you aren’t dehydrated - and if you’re dehydrated, your skin probably is, too.
